Wisdom from the Wastelands Issue #51: Mutated Animal/Plant Genotypes

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Wisdom from the Wastelands Issue #51: Mutated Animal/Plant Genotypes

Wisdom from the Wastelands Issue #51: Mutated Animal/Plant Genotypes is a role playing game supplement published by Skirmisher Publishing for use with the Mutant Future system. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License though no parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result. The Wisdom from the Wastelands series introduces new options for Mutant Future and this one has new character options.

The supplement is available as a 30-page PDF on DriveThruRPG for $2.99 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. Two pages are the front and rear covers, one page is the front matter, one the Open Gaming License and one is an ad.

Wisdom from the Wastelands Issue #51: Mutated Animal/Plant GenotypesThe supplement starts off by looking at what happens when a player wants to play a mutated animal. They can choose an existing species from the core book and use some new options, or they could create a new species. The supplement has a list of animal genotypes to choose from to create a new mutated animal. There are 58 different genotypes, which includes sea creatures, flyers and insects. Each genotype is given example types, size comparison – there is chart to explain this – natural attacks – another chart for this – reaction modifier, stat modification, advantages, disadvantages and, in some cases, a note.

Mutant Plant Genotypes is very similar, but looks at plants; it’s stated that plants are assumed to have mobility, no matter what. Ten plant genotypes are then covered in the same manner as the animals.

Advantages & Disadvantages has 43 of these which are referred to in the different creature descriptions. Though some of these can be similar to mutations, they are generally natural features of the creatures.

New Mutations has two new mutations along with new body parts for creatures to gain from one of these.

Using Existing Monsters as PC Races has a chart of the existing creatures with the features needed for characters to play them.

Increased Statistic Charts has modified tables for stats above the normal max of 18, going up to 30, and what effect these have, along with several new rules options.

Wisdom from the Wastelands Issue #51: Mutated Animal/Plant Genotypes in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with only the major sections linked. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a number of colour illustrations, up to full page in size, that are tweaked photos. Presentation is adequate.

This supplement greatly extends the player options when it comes to character races in comparison to the core book. Not only can characters be from many of the intelligent creatures in the core book itself, tools are provided that could cover just about any living creature found, in broad categories, making it very useful for playing a range of different options.
