Weekly Wonders – Abyssal Hordes by Alex Riggs and Joshua Zaback is a role playing game supplement published by Necromancers of the Northwest for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.
The supplement is available as an 11-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $1.49 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. Two pages are the front and rear covers, one the front matter and one the Open Game License.
The Introduction states that this supplement has unique demons that can be summoned up. When a demon is summoned, a roll is made to determine whether a specific demon answers, or the more likely normal one. Those who know of the name of a specific demon can choose to summon it.
The demons themselves are then divided into groups. All of the named demons are given a description and mechanics, which is how they differ from a standard demon of that type; some also have stat blocks.
Babaus starts with Bloody Jack, a demon with vigilante levels. Another is Haraxus, who doesn’t ooze acidic slime but flammable oil. There is a single Balor, Bakhephros, who hates life as much as daemons. Carcasho is a dretch cleric and Gorblast a dretch who has become a masochist. Orgmond the Foul is a dretch who is even filthier than the norm.
Barbexur is the sole glabrezu and a sorcerer. Gluraum is a Hezrou barbarian, who once was close to becoming a demon prince but grew lazy and fell from their height. Quasits sees Sarlus, who delights in breaking up lovers, and Zanzibrand the Magnificent, who has occultist skills. Araxitor is an ancient shadow demon that is no longer vulnerable to light. Ninxia is a succubus mesmerist. Finally, Greinoch is a vrock slayer.
Weekly Wonders – Abyssal Hordes in Review
The PDF is well bookmarked with every demon linked. Navigation is good. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There is a single colour illustration. Presentation is okay.
Normally, the only demons given names and different stats are demon lords, princes and the occasional powerful demon such as a balor. Other demons are simply faceless hordes, all with the same abilities. This supplement alters that, by adding a number of demons with their own individual skills and personalities. Though they could just be used as summoned creatures, as mentioned, it would be interesting to encounter some of them in other ways, as their personalities mean they have definite purposes of their own. Weekly Wonders – Abyssal Hordes is a great way of adding more interesting demons and it can be found by clicking here.
