Villains II

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Villains II

Villains II by Creighton Broadhurst and Martin Tideswell is a role playing game supplement published by Raging Swan Press for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 30-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $3.99 but was purchased at a reduced price in a special bundle. Two pages are the front and rear covers, four the front matter and Contents, one is an ad and one the Open Game License. The PDF comes in two versions, one optimised for print and high-end devices and the other for low end devices and mobile.

Reading Stat Blocks is a standard page for the publisher explaining how to use these.

Minions is the first section and has those who might work for a villain. The first two are gargoyle scouts and ghast hordelings, which are general purpose minions. The ghasts have stats for ordinary hordelings and leaders, as well as a sidebar for different encounter groups.

Villains IINext are three individuals who are described in more detail. They are named, given a description, opening paragraph, background, personality, mannerisms, distinguishing features and adventure hooks, as well as stats and occasional sidebars with more details.

Guthseyr is an invisible stalker tracker, spy and assassin.

Thothosk is a quasit con man, bard and fixer.

Voarothim is an ogre-mage fighter, who has alternate forms.

Villains covers the greater threats, in a similar manner to the previous section, though in greater depth.

Vilran Azanae is a vampiric wizard more interested in developing his magical skills than his vampiric ones.

Irdenseyr Lhamgos is an incubus who is motivated purely by personal gratification and the promotion of infidelity.

Parardar Levien is a lich who identifies strongly with dragons thanks to his sorcerous heritage.

Koravel Nahel is the founder and head of an order of werewolf druids.

Rexal Urexin is a bloodthirsty pirate.

Calaunfel Wyrxin was mummified whilst still alive and now seeks revenge, though even the village that he was from no longer exists.

Villains II in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with everything except sidebars linked. The Contents only covers the main sections and is hyperlinked. Navigation is good. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are black and white stock illustrations for every NPC. Presentation is decent.

It should be noted that the six NPCs in the Villains section are duplicated in Campaign Codex #4: Greater Villains (P1), a supplement that, though updated, is more expensive and lacks the minions included in this supplement, making this better value for money.

The villains themselves are all dangerous, and some of them are very dangerous. They could be encountered in a variety of ways, but given their motivations are unlikely to be encountered randomly. In many cases, characters may first encounter those working for the villains, rather than the villains themselves. Given the NPCs have different motivations, it is entirely possible to encounter all of them at different points. Villains II can be found by clicking here.
