Vathak 5e Adventures - Tapestry of Lies

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Vathak 5e Adventures – Tapestry of Lies

Vathak 5e Adventures – Tapestry of Lies by Geoff Gander is a role playing game supplement published by Fat Goblin Games for use with Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result. This is an adventure for 4 characters of 3rd-4th level.

Vathak 5e Adventures - Tapestry of LiesThe supplement is available as a 14-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $3.95 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. Two pages are the front and rear covers, one the front matter and one the Open Game License.

Adventure Background explains that the village of Carrickmoor has been plagued by giant vermin every year and the locals are offering a reward to solve the problem.

Adventure Location explains that the village is in Moorhaven but can be placed anywhere. A sidebar gives some details on Carrickmoor’s surrounds.

Adventure Hooks has a number of ways to get the characters involved.

Running this Adventure and Abbreviations explains what’s needed and how material is laid out. A sidebar gives some details on the Shadows over Vathak setting.

A Plague of Vermin covers how the characters can find about the vermin problem, and a local guide to help show them around. A sidebar has some details on local customs. Once the characters find the source of the giant vermin, they can investigate the small dungeon from which they originate.

There are two main endings to the adventure, one with the characters successful and one where they are not, the latter proving to be more dangerous than might be thought. A third is neither true success nor true failure, but the characters are no longer welcome.

The final page of content has a new monster.

Vathak 5e Adventures – Tapestry of Lies in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a number of colour illustrations, up to half page in size, and a black and white map. Presentation is okay.

Though this is in theory set in Shadows Over Vathak, the connections to the setting are minimal and it’s easy enough to drop it almost anywhere, even with Vathak itself. This makes it more generically useful than it might seem. The adventure is mostly straightforward, but the bad ending twist may come as a nasty shock to players; they may not discover anything about that if everything goes well.
