Unterherz #2020

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Unterherz #2020

Unterherz #2020 is a role playing game supplement written and published by Kai Pütz a.k.a Gregorius21778 for use with Lamentations of the Flame Princess. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 24-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $2.50 but was purchased at a reduced price during a sale. One page is the front cover, half a page is the front matter and one the Open Game License. The PDF comes in two versions, one a printer friendlier version without the coloured background. There are also three jpgs depicting locations.

The opening paragraphs explain that this is a collection of material previously published on a blog for use with Veins of the Earth.

Unterherz #2020Teats of Stone describes a new and, for the Veins, really inexpensive food, a liquid that resembles milk, which should make people suspicious. It describes where it comes from and what happens to those that drink it. Unsurprisingly, this is bad.

Five Dvargir Encounters has exactly what it says; five different encounters with these Dwarfs, some with described locations.

A Cave of Bones & Coins is a cavern with a narrow shaft leading a long way up to a village on the surface. This is a well, and one down which the villagers throw suspected witches, vampires, plague victims and other people and bodies they want to be rid of.

Vendors at a Knotsmen Market has a collection of 20 different sellers.

12 Quest of Deep Janeen has a dozen, rather odd, adventure hooks.

Sleepstalkers are a new creature that drinks blood.

Dark Deception Kills the Light is a new spell.

Spell-Sets for Aelf-Adal has 10 different sets of spells for the elves to have access to, depending on their role, with the logic behind the choices. The spells are taken from LotFP and Veins of the Earth.

Phantasmal Nightmare Creatures has six different creatures and a table of nightmare effects.

Summoned Substratals has a series of thorough tables for generating these.

Abandoned River Outpost is a small outpost that changed hands between the Dvargir and Aelf-Adal several times but is currently unoccupied.

Unterherz #2020 in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with major and some minor sections linked. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a two-column format and a number of minor errors were noticed. There are a number of pieces of black and white stock art, plus the jpg maps. Presentation is okay.

This is the second of these supplements and, like the first, it is a collection of blog posts, so the only overriding theme is Veins of the Earth and, like the first, has a range of options for expanding that setting. Again, the material could be repurposed to other settings, but having the Veins book to hand would be helpful for doing that as there are references to it. Adapting it to other settings, or to other OSR games, is possible but probably not that easy. Unterherz #2020 is another interesting collection of new material for Veins of the Earth and it can be found by clicking here.
