Unterherz #2019 is a role playing game supplement written and published by Kai Pütz a.k.a Gregorius21778 for use with Lamentations of the Flame Princess. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.
The supplement is available as a 24-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $3 but was purchased at a reduced price during a sale. One page is the front cover, half a page is the front matter, one page is ads and one the Open Game License. The PDF comes in two versions, one a printer friendlier version without the coloured background.
The opening paragraphs explain that this is a collection of material previously published on a blog for use with Veins of the Earth.
Food in the Veins explains that food is rare, and this has eight ideas for food. Nutrition values have been calculated with the help of The Meat Lover´s Guide To The Post Apocalypse and some of these have Bushcraft details.
Post-Battle Cannibalism states that nobody in the Veins can afford to ignore a source of food and has some rules on how to best carve food sources up for consumption; death in battle automatically reduces the amount of available food.
The Soup-Wyrm is a small encounter with an unusual feature that is constantly making soup. Inspired by The Clangers, of all things.
Encounters Near a Veins’ City has ten encounters for such areas.
Stupid, Stupid Cambrimen introduces the Cambrimen; proto-cell based organisms that attempt to mimic human life. Badly. This has several encounters with creatures intended to be comic relief.
Giant Scutigera has stats and details for a new creature.
Little Lightthieves are small things that gradually leech away light.
Four Peculiar Light Sources is what it says; four new light sources.
Magic Items in the Veins explains that magic items are rare in LotFP game worlds, but the veins are peculiar enough that magic items should fit. A selection is then described.
The King That Was and Will Be is a new religion, a god-king that was deposed and imprisoned within the Veins.
Lair of the Child-Robber is a small dungeon addition for the Veins, in which the characters deal with a creature preying on children. There are some hooks for getting them involved.
Unterherz #2019 in Review
The PDF lacks bookmarks and has enough different sections that these would have been useful. There are a number of external links, but these don’t seem to work, possibly due to the watermarking process which has been known to cause problems. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a two-column format and a few minor errors were noticed. There are a number of appropriate stock black and white illustrations. Presentation is decent.
Being a collection of blog posts, the only overriding theme of this supplement is Veins of the Earth. It does have quite a bit of material that can be used to expand that already fairly large setting, with new locations and new options. It does have a goodly array of new options for the Veins setting; it’s possible some at least could be repurposed for other settings, though having the Veins book would help because there are a few references to material in that. Adapting it is therefore not the easiest thing to do, but isn’t impossible. Unterherz #2019 is an interesting collection of new material for Veins of the Earth and it can be found by clicking here.
