A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Torg Eternity – Aysle – Revenge of the Carredon

Torg Eternity – Aysle – Revenge of the Carredon is a role playing game supplement published by Ulisses Spiele for use with Torg Eternity. This is an adventure set in Aysle.

The supplement is available as a 114-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $17.49. It is also available in printed form from sites such as Amazon. The PDF is the version reviewed although it was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. Two pages are the front and rear covers, one the front matter, two the table of contents and one the Index.

Torg Eternity - Aysle - Revenge of the CarredonThe Introduction explains that this adventure takes place in the second half of the first year of the war, and it will determine the fate of Tolwyn Tancred. The Gaunt Man, in order to help Uthorion, gave his lieutenant a powerful dragon he had corrupted called the Carredon. Tolwyn fought and defeated it, ending up in its home cosm before arriving in Aysle, carrying its spirit with her. She must be freed from it. A synopsis is given for the adventure, as well as how to alter it for Beta Clearance, and a note is given on the adventure’s timing.

Act One: The Mark of the Beast starts with the characters in Oxford, where they defend against an attack by Uthorion’s forces. They are invited to a celebratory feast, but end up having to stop Tolwyn, then defend the Archmagus Wyrwind during a ritual to investigate her curse. He shares with them what he knows and where they need to go, leading to the characters breaking out from Oxford. During this, they hear about an acorn falling from the sky.

Act Two: A Viking Thing has the Storm Knights heading to Oslo to attend a Viking Thing – a meeting of the clan leaders which shows the different factions – heading to claim the acorn with several other factions attempting to do the same. Once this is done, they then need to try and leave, hopefully with the acorn.

Act Three: Forbidden Isle has the Storm Knights heading to Dublin to look for a scroll, which sends them after a fey who is said to have it and needing to defuse a conflict with a town besieged by enraged elves. The fey in question wants a Nightmare Tree uprooted, and the characters gain an unexpected ally in this.

Act Four: Seed of the World has the Storm Knights travelling into the Land Between to search for the third essence, helping to defend a dwarven fortress and an artefact, crossing a lake of magma and coming to the Seed of the World, now the prison for an insane demigod.

Act Five: Bone and Steel has the Storm Knights questing for another essence, the skull of a lyche, and seek out a pirate captain said to have such, attracting the attentions of a pirate hunter, exploring an old ruin, meeting a ship in trouble and finally confronting the pirate.

Act Six: Aelward’s Amazing Engine has the Storm Knights looking for the Carredon’s heart, which sees them head to London to recover the stolen parts needed to use a machine that can get them to the Carredon’s dead home world, and then head back again.

Act Seven: Untwisting Fate is the final act of the adventure. The Storm Knights have to make their way back to Oxford, deal with foes following before they can start the final ritual, battle aspects of the Carredon and then deal with the aftermath.

Threats and Villains has details and stats for various NPC foes and enemies.

Secrets of Oxford has some details on the city, covering various important locations, recent history and notable local NPCs.

The Secret History of the Carredon explains how the beast came to be and its original origins before the Gaunt Man encountered it.

Torg Eternity – Aysle – Revenge of the Carredon in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with the various sections and major subsections linked. The table of contents is to a greater level of depth. The Index is thorough. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be almost free of errors. There are a variety of colour illustrations and maps. Presentation is good.

With this being set during the first year of the war, and all the cosm sourcebooks being set after the end of that year, it’s possible for the characters, especially if they fail, to make a significant difference to the Aysle sourcebook, invalidating a chunk of it and getting various important NPCs killed. For characters to have a major influence is good; for this influence to alter the published sourcebooks that come after is bad. The GM would perhaps be better advised to tweak the adventure to the degree needed to set it after the end of Year One.

Secrets of Oxford is a useful section, as it provides at least some more details on Oxford that enable the GM to use it outside the adventure, or expand the adventure itself with side quests. It’s not a thorough detailing of the city, but it does have a nice chunk of extra information. The Secret History of the Carredon provides information on the Carredon that is of interest, though given what it describes, it seems doubtful that the characters would ever discover any of it. This makes it an interesting, yet potentially pointless, section.

This is an adventure of middling significance; it can have effects on the setting as well as killing off important NPCs who are supposed to be alive, but isn’t enormously world-changing. It also provides extra information that the GM can expand on or use. Torg Eternity – Aysle – Revenge of the Carredon can be found by clicking here.
