Tontury Lake by Rob Barnes is a role playing game supplement published by Columbia Games Inc. for use with Hârn and HârnMaster.
The supplement is available as an eight-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $5.98 but was purchased at a reduced price during a sale.
The opening paragraphs explains this is Hârn’s second largest lake after Lake Benath, what lies on its borders, the plentiful plants, fish and animals and the discovery of gold. There are risks from the Pagaelin nomads and gargun, and the marshlands are home to the Ilme, or mere-dragons. The sidebar has which map sections the lake is in and its elevation.
History explains little is known about the ancient history of the region, and it covers the Kingdom of Darlen, a Jarin state that ended thanks to Lothrim the Foulspawner, the migration wars thanks to the Pagaelin tribes who raided Chybisa and Pagostra and the establishment of the Kingdom of Kaldor saw the region brought under the nominal control of the crown. The sidebar looks at a legendary item and a notorious witch.
Current Situation explains that jaded young nobles have been hunting in the region, the current situation with the gargun and the changes in the Pagaelin tribes, the expansion of guilds into the region and the holdings of the Laranian Church, with the Order of the Lady of Paladins and the Order of the Spear of Shattered Sorrow, as well as Ilviran priests of the Order of the Yellow Hand seeking a manuscript covered in the sidebar.
Wildlife looks at the various fauna that can be found in the region, and the sidebar briefly covers the Ilme and mentions a legendary serpentine monster.
Geography looks at the lake itself, the weather and then the three distinct regions around the lake, with a map of the lake and borders.
Valdrun covers one of these regions, which is occupied by gargun and Pagaelin, with Jarin barrows and a Laranian monastery, as well as the discovery of gold. A sidebar has an encounter table and details on a specific location.
Darlen covers the second region and the locations in it, with much under the aegis of the Church of Larani. The sidebar has an encounter table and another location.
Ilmen Marsh covers the final region, the home for the Ilme, along with Pagaelin and gargun, and the plants gathered annually by the Apothecaries’ Guild. The sidebar has the encounter table and a secretion from the Ilme and attempts by the Temple of Halea to acquire it.
Tontury Lake in Review
The PDF lacks bookmarks and, though short, has enough sections that they would have been useful. Navigation could be better. The text is either single column with sidebar or two columns and appeared to be free of errors. There are a number of black and white illustrations as well as the map. Presentation is decent.
This supplement covers an area of Hârn in a reasonable amount of detail, though there are other supplements that can expand on it. There are no stats, meaning that this will work with other systems, though the sidebar encounter tables do refer to HârnMaster 3 for some results. Tontury Lake is a useful addition, though at full price expensive even by Hârn standards, and it can be found by clicking here.
