The Village Monster – A Hero Kids Compatible Adventure by Joshua Bixler is a role playing game supplement published by Bix Six Adventures for use with Hero Kids.
This is available as a PDF from DriveThruRPG for $2 but was purchased at a reduced price during a sale. The pdf has 36 pages and one page is the front cover and one the Credits.
Tips & Reminders is a standard page and has advice on running the adventure, what is needed to play and what to do if all the characters are knocked out during combat.
The Overview is the next two pages and has a summary of the adventure. There are a Prologue and five encounters.
The Prologue takes place in the village tavern, where the players are told the story so far, that a werebear has attacked a friend and the villagers are gathering to hunt it down. There are two games characters can play in the tavern; if they win, they get a benefit.
The five encounters have the characters encountering orcs, finding the werebear, returning to the village, dealing with treachery and finally an orc attack on the village. There are a couple of options in the encounters, although they do not significantly change things. One encounter has the players attempting to realise that the werebear isn’t what it seems. This depends completely on players’ skills, and it might be hard for younger children to grasp the twist. In such cases, although it isn’t stated, it would probably be a good idea to substitute a skill roll to do this.
Following this are four pages of monster cards, 7 in total, and three battlemaps for the combat encounters.
The Village Monster – A Hero Kids Compatible Adventure in Review
The PDF is bookmarked with the major sections linked. A bit more depth would have been appreciated. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a two-column colour format and appeared to be free of error. There are a number of illustrations within the text, which appear to be reproductions of the images from the monster cards and the battlemaps. All are custom. Presentation is decent, although the battlemaps are a bit lacking.
Apart from the potential problem where the players, not the characters, have to figure out the twist, this is a decent little adventure, especially as the Prologue contains a non-combat pair of skill tests that do have a benefit. This can easily be fixed by the GM though. The Village Monster – A Hero Kids Compatible Adventure can be found by clicking here.
