The Valley of the Damned

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement The Valley of the Damned

The Valley of the Damned by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with OSRIC. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The Valley of the DamnedThe supplement is available as a 32 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover, three the front matter and three the Open Game License.

Background explains how a dwarf and his party who were searching for a legendary dwarven axe disappeared nearly a century ago and that recently the remains of what is believed to be one of the members of his party were found in a cave. This has drawn adventurers looking for the axe.

Game Master Notes explains that the cave is a portal to another world where dinosaurs roam, fantasy creatures are absent and magic is different. The axe is in the cave of a T. rex. The adventure is aimed at characters from 10th to 13th level and it gives a brief overview of the valley and the T. rex’s location.

Valley of the Damned has random encounters within the caves and the valley.

The Caves of Doom Key covers the locations in the caves.

The Valley of the Damned Key covers the valley itself.

The Great Mother’s Cave covers the T. rex’s lair.

New Monsters has a variety of new creatures.

New Magic Items just has one, the dwarven axe which is an artefact.

The final three pages of content are maps.

The Valley of the Damned in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a two-column format and some minor errors were noticed. There are a number of stock colour and black and white illustrations. Presentation is okay.

This is one of the classic “Lost World” style of adventures seen in fiction and RPGs; The Isle of Dread is perhaps the most famous fantasy one. It has many of the classic tropes of such, especially the dinosaurs, but also primitive humanoids and other dangers. There isn’t really anything new in this, but it is decently done and the characters might end up with a powerful artefact from the adventure. The Valley of the Damned can be found by clicking here.
