The Throne of Skulls by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with OSRIC. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.
The supplement is available as a 22 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three the front matter and three the Open Game License.
The opening paragraph explains that the adventurers stumble across a hideaway shaped like a giant skull, which might be home to the Grandmaster of Assassins.
For the Dungeon Master explains the adventure is for 10th level characters and that the skull fortress teleports to different destinations every 1-4 days. It also states this is a deadly adventure filled with traps and assassins.
Random Encounters has a single potential type of random encounter inside the fortress, a guard patrol.
Key to the Skull Fortress starts with a few general details and then covers the various locations. As stated, this is a complex full of traps, as well as a variety of high-level characters.
Members of the Assassin Guild has stats for various assassins.
New Magic Items has new items, with a definite bent towards those useful for assassins, as well as an evil artefact.
The final page of content has a map of the fortress.
The Throne of Skulls in Review
The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a single column format and some minor errors were noticed. Bar the map and covers, there are no illustrations. Presentation is okay.
This is a fairly small location to explore, which actually makes it more dangerous, as it’s possible that the inhabitants could support each other. The inhabitants themselves are dangerous; as well as the fact that there are assassins, with the dangers such possess, many of the inhabitants, both assassins and others, are higher level than the characters, and well-equipped. This could easily become a fatal adventure for the 10th level characters it’s intended for, as they may simply get overwhelmed by the inhabitants, especially after facing the traps.
