The Summoning

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement The Summoning

The Summoning by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with OSRIC. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 27 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three the front matter and three the Open Game License.

The SummoningThe opening paragraphs explain that a religious sect used to be powerful but it was crushed following rumours about ill deeds and suggestions that they were going to assassinate the king. Recently, more rumours suggest the cult has returned.

Notes for the Dungeon Master explains this adventure is intended of 6-8 characters of 10th to 14th level. The characters are to investigate a supposed temple of the cult, who are back and trying to bring their evil demi-god back. The temple is in some caves and can be placed anywhere.

Rumors Table has 20 rumours, some true, some false, some a combination, and how the characters might hear them.

The Mountain briefly covers the mountain where the temple’s cave system is.

Random Encounters Within the Caves has a d6 table of random encounters.

Key to the Caves covers the temple, a complex with the usual treasures and dangers.

New Monsters has the new monsters.

New Items has new magic items, some quite powerful.

The final page of content has a map of the caves.

The Summoning in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a single column format and some minor errors were noticed. Bar the map and covers, there are no illustrations. Presentation is okay.

The cultists are indeed trying to summon their demi-god, and if the characters don’t manage to stop the ceremony, they will have to fight him. The demi-god is a comparatively minor one, but he’s still a demi-god, and this makes the adventure more dangerous. Especially as the demi-god is going to bear a grudge if defeated.
