The Silver Unicorn Inn

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement The Silver Unicorn Inn

The Silver Unicorn Inn by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with OSRIC. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result. This is an adventure for up to six characters of 4th to 7th level.

The supplement is available as a 22 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three the front matter and three the Open Game License.

The Silver Unicorn InnThe opening paragraphs explain that there are many inns around, and though many are normal, some have secrets. The Silver Unicorn has a fine tavern as well as a few rooms. However, a number of people have gone missing after staying at it.

For the Dungeon Master explains the inn can be placed in any decent sized town or city and is home to a thieves’ guild that makes their money from kidnapping and ransom.

Possible Hooks has four adventure hooks.

Rumors has ten rumours to hear, some true, some false and one a bit of both.

Key to the Silver Unicorn has random encounters in the tavern, upper level and basement, as well as details on the various locations.

The Rogue Thieves Guild has stats for the thieves.

Hotel Guests has ten guests who could be staying.

Tavern Visitors has 20 NPCs who might be encountered in the tavern.

Employees of the Inn has stats for these.

New Magical Items has a few new items.

The final page of content has a map of the inn.

The Silver Unicorn Inn in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a single column format and some minor errors were noticed. Bar the map and covers, there are no illustrations. Presentation is okay.

Though this is an adventure, it could also be used as a regular inn, one which the characters stumble across by accident. It’s unlikely any of them would look like good kidnapping targets, but if they visit it regularly, they may notice something, especially as there are clues to encounter in the place. It’s also less likely to be functioning as an independent operation in an urban area with a powerful thieves’ guild, unless it is really surreptitious in its actions.
