The Shattered Tower of Grimlov

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement The Shattered Tower of Grimlov

The Shattered Tower of Grimlov by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with OSRIC. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 32 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three the front matter and three the Open Game License.

The Shattered Tower of GrimlovThe opening paragraphs explain that the Wizard Grimlov was known to be an eccentric. He built a tower overlooking a village and, though sometimes worrying, his presence kept enemies away from the village. Nine months ago, there was a massive explosion and Grimlov has not been seen since, though recently there have been signs of activity.

For the Dungeon Master explains this is an adventure for characters of 3rd to 5th level and that a good mix of abilities is suggested. It also explains the abbreviations used.

The Village of Melad Crossings covers the ten most important places in the village, as far as the characters are concerned, and has some random encounters and rumours, some true, some false, some partly true.

Possible Ways into the Tower lists various potential methods and entrances, as it currently appears to be blocked.

The Shattered Tower of Grimlov details the tower. There are some random encounters and a mix of monsters, traps and treasure, with quite a lot of magic as befits a wizard’s tower.

New Monsters lists a single new monster.

New Magic Items has some new items.

The final three pages of content have maps of the tower, including an exterior view, and the village.

The Shattered Tower of Grimlov in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a single column format and some minor errors were noticed. Bar the maps and covers, there are no illustrations. Presentation is okay.

This is a simple enough adventure though naturally this does not mean safe. All the characters need to do is gain access to the tower and explore it to discover what’s going on. Both of these actions are dangerous, but not excessively so. Beyond that, it’s a simple tower exploration dealing with the perils to be found inside it.
