The Scroungers by Dave Woodrum is a role playing game supplement published by Fishwife Games as either generic or for use with Mutant Romp!
The supplement is available as a PDF from DriveThruRPG for $2.99, as a softcover print on demand book for $6.99 or as both PDF and softcover for $7.99. The PDF is the version reviewed although it was purchased at a reduced price during a sale. It has 17 pages with one being the front cover and one the front matter.
The Introduction explains that the gang called the Scroungers is a drop-in gang suitable for an apocalyptic setting, with notes on the members and their hideout.
Background explains that they are a ruthless gang of looters. There is an optional d6 table of ways the characters could encounter them.
The Gang explains that there are 14 members to the gang and there’s a list of the names, roles, descriptions and weapons/attacks of the members.
Map Locations details the places on the map of the gang’s hideout; there are Mutant Romp! notes where appropriate. There is also a d100 table with 50 items of random loot that could be found in the hideout; the loot is useful or potentially valuable items suitable for a post-apocalyptic setting.
Following this are black and white maps of the hideout. Though both are labelled “GM Copy” one lacks labels and is clearly for players.
Gang Member Stats covers the members in more detail. These have the Mutant Romp! stats for the members.
The Scroungers in Review
The PDF lacks bookmarks and has enough different sections that these would have been useful. The text maintains a single column format and appeared to be mostly free of error. Apart from the map, there are a couple of black and white illustrations. Presentation is adequate. There are also a number of blank areas labelled “Notes” for the GM to make their own notes.
The gang is most suited for a near-now post-apocalyptic setting, and one that has had some kind of incident that has led to mutations; this makes it rather specifically useful when it comes to setting. Using it with other systems will require converting the Mutant Romp! stats, so this is perhaps less generically useful than typical for the publisher. Still, for a suitable setting, this is useful.
