The Infinity Shift

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement The Infinity Shift

The Infinity Shift by Dennis Detwiler is a role playing game supplement published by Monte Cook Games and is a short adventure for use with the Cypher System.

The supplement is available as a 26-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $4.99 but was purchased at a reduced price thanks to a special bundle. One page is the front cover, one the front matter and Table of Contents and one page is blank for GM’s Notes.

The Infinity ShiftIn this adventure, the characters are Air Force personnel working at the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program in Alaska. The characters are the only occupants of the base with the scientists who carry out the experiments doing so by phone, telling the characters what breakers to pull.

An introduction is given covering the six pre-generated characters, an overview of the next experiment and a map of the base. The characters are in the control room when the next experiment starts and things go wrong, as power is lost yet the machinery keeps running.

The final twelve pages of the supplement are the six pre-generated characters.

The Infinity Shift in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with major and minor sections linked. The Table of Contents is less thorough, only covering the major sections, and is also hyperlinked. Navigation is very good. The text maintains the standard two column with sidebar colour format and appeared to be free of errors. The sidebars have references to other supplements and stats. There are a number of colour illustrations that look as if they may be custom. Presentation is very good.

This is a pretty straightforward adventure. The characters are essentially trapped in an underground base – they can get to the surface, but can’t do anything there – with things roaming the corridors. They need to undo what caused the problems whilst dealing with the creatures in the base. The creatures vary in intelligence and hostility; some are always hostile whilst others can be reasoned with. The GM may also add extra creatures if they wish. This adventure doesn’t appear to be tied to a particular setting and appears to be best used with the pre-generated characters as a one-shot. There’s no reason for anyone but the pre-generated USAF characters, or similar, to be at the base, and unless the GM does something like maroon them in another world – a definite possibility – the characters will be restricted by being serving personnel afterwards. The Infinity Shift is a decent little adventure and it can be found by clicking here.
