A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement The House of Falknor

The House of Falknor by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with OSRIC. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 28 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front are rear covers, three the front matter and three the Open Game License.

The House of FalknorThe opening paragraphs explain that Lord Falknor has an estate on the edge of town and there are rumours he is older than he looks. Some family members are concerned, and fear he might have become a vampire. They have managed to get the adventurers invited to the estate to investigate.

For the Game Master explains that the adventure is for 4-6 characters of levels 8-10. It explains how Lord Falknor looks the way he does – clearly inspired by The Portrait of Dorian Grey – and that this method also makes him nearly invulnerable. The characters will need to investigate first.

Random Encounters has various random encounters, with the lord, his staff and protectors, and a couple for the dungeon level.

Key to the House of Falknor details the various locations, including the dungeon. As well as the main occupants, there are various other hazards and monsters, making this a dangerous place, but one that will need exploring to defeat Falknor.

The Ghost of Corrine Falkner gives details on her.

New Magic Items has these.

New Monsters has these.

The final page of content has a map of the house and dungeon.

The House of Falknor in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a single column format and some minor errors were noticed. Bar the covers and map, there are no illustrations. Presentation is okay.

This is a potentially dangerous adventure, especially for players whose first instinct is to rush in. Trying to fight Falknor and his staff is dangerous at the best of times; if he hasn’t been made vulnerable, it will be even more so. The location has plenty of dangers of its own as well. The House of Falknor is a difficult adventure and it can be found by clicking here.
