The Harvest

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement The Harvest

The Harvest by Nicholas Masyk is a role playing game supplement published by Monkey’s Paw Games. This is an Incursion, or adventure, for use with Trophy Dark.

The supplement is available as a 10-page PDF from itch for $5 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special offer. One page is the front cover and around have a page the front matter.

The HarvestThe opening paragraphs explain that there is a hamlet that was swallowed up by the forest. The villagers who lived there paid a tribute to remain untouched, until it became too high. This tribute is supposedly in a hollow tree at the centre and other things may have been abandoned.

The Theme for the Incursion is “Harvest”. It follows the standard format, beginning with Conditions, which are how characters change, and Moments, which are sentences to dot the narrative with.

The five-ring format sees the characters encountering Terrors and Temptations in each ring as they get closer to the village.

The Harvest in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is short enough that these are not needed. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. Though the pages have borders, there are no illustrations, bar the front cover. Presentation is adequate.

Like all Trophy Dark Incursions, this doesn’t really have a win condition. Also, like all of them, it’s more narrative based than mechanics based. Whilst the Terrors and Temptations did seem to fit the theme, the Moments and Conditions sometimes seemed a bit farther afield of it. In some cases, it was hard to see just what connection they had; they weren’t bad, they just didn’t feel thematic. The Harvest can’t be played by itself; a copy of Trophy Dark will also be needed to play, but that can be got for free. The game may be very narrative based, but it does have some mechanics. The Harvest can be found on itch by clicking here.
