The Flocculent Cathedral by Jim Crocker is a role playing game supplement published for use with Trophy Dark. This is an Incursion – a Trophy Dark adventure – and is one of the Kickstarter sample PDFs.
This is available as a 10-page PDF with one page being the front cover.
It starts with Hunters Who Hunger for Knowledge Forbidden which has new options for Trophy Dark. There are four new occupations, six new backgrounds, all of which are disgraced, disowned or humiliated, six new drives and six new rituals.
The Flocculent Cathedral is the Incursion itself. This is laid out in the standard manner. The theme for the Incursion is “Moss”. It starts with two sets of six Moments; the first set for results 1,2 or 3 on a dark die and the second for 4,5 or 6. There are 18 Conditions, with the groupings of six being for 1 and 2, 3 and 4 and 5 and 6. Each of the Moments and Conditions follows the theme.
Finally, there are the five Rings. Each Ring has Terrors and Temptations; varying numbers in each of the Rings. Again, these follow the theme.
The Flocculent Cathedral in Review
The PDF lacks bookmarks and, even though it’s quite short, they would have been appreciated. Navigation is poor. The text maintains a single column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a couple of minor illustrations. Presentation is okay.
With this being a primarily narrative game, the descriptions are important. There is a good amount of descriptions for the different areas – Moments, Conditions and Rings. Each of the descriptions is thorough and thematically appropriate, both to the overall theme of Moss and the general Trophy Dark theme of the characters being doomed treasure hunters. The chance of things not going well is suitably high. Characters are probably more likely to come out of the incursion warped or dead than to come out of it successful. The Flocculent Cathedral is a nice, as in dark, example of a Trophy Dark Incursion.
