The Fane of the Hungry God

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement The Fane of the Hungry God

The Fane of the Hungry God is a role playing game supplement written and published by Bear Wizard. This is a short dungeon that is stated to be suitable for use with older versions of Dungeons & Dragons.

The Fane of the Hungry GodThe supplement is available as a four page Pay What You Want PDF from itch. One page is the front cover.

The first page starts with The Fane of the Hungry God, which explains that this is a hidden temple dedicated to That Which Hungers From Below, the god of ghouls, and gives some general details. This is followed by the Bestiary, which has stats for several ghouls of different types and a couple of other monsters.

The second page starts with a d12 table of treasures. This is followed by a map of the dungeon with descriptions of various important areas. Five locations are described on the map, though only two of those have creatures occupying them.

The final page has a d20 table of random encounters.

The Fane of the Hungry God in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is short enough that they are not needed. Navigation is fine. The text maintains aa two column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a number of stock black and white illustrations. Presentation is fine, although it’s a shame there isn’t a larger, player-friendly version of the map.

The dungeon should be comparatively easy to convert to a number of OSR and D&D-based systems; converting it to more modern systems will require more work. It’s comparatively small and the random encounter table is really rather large for a dungeon with only five locations important enough to describe. All told, the encounter table feels like it came from a significantly larger dungeon. The Fane of the Hungry God is a short dungeon that, with a bit of work – it feels a bit unfinished; a framework for a dungeon – could perhaps be dropped into an adventure.
