The Dee Sanction: The Monk's Cowl

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement The Dee Sanction: The Monk’s Cowl

The Dee Sanction: The Monk’s Cowl by Paul Baldowski is a role playing game supplement published by Just Crunch Games for use with The Dee Sanction.

The supplement is available as a three-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $1.81 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a bundle.

The Dee Sanction: The Monk's CowlThe first part of the supplement gives the background details, which explains that a local fanatic seeks to summon the Green Man to acquire power. This is likely a mistake. There are details on some important people, beings and locations, and gossip that the characters could hear.

Following this are details of three major locations in the area, which in some cases have several people, locations and organisations to encounter. By exploring these the agents can gain details that may, or may not, be helpful; they might end up accidentally summoning the Green Man due to a misunderstanding of some information.

Finally, there are some brief details on the Lord of Misrule, and a new monster, a cockatrice; these can be found in the area and, though dangerous, at least don’t turn people to stone.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and at this length doesn’t need them. Navigation is fine. The text maintains a four-column landscape format, which is difficult to read on smaller devices without zooming, and appeared to be free of errors. There is a single illustration, a map of the local area. Presentation is adequate.

This is in some ways a bit of a nasty adventure. The agents may gain information but, as mentioned, some of it is definitely misleading, due to the antagonist using one word with a different meaning to anyone else. Of course, this is a game where the agents are supposed to be often overmatched or out of their depth. The local map also has various locations that are not covered in any detail, so a GM has room to expand the adventure. The Dee Sanction: The Monk’s Cowl can be found by clicking here.
