A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Swine

Swine by Jonathan Davidson and John Sgammato is a role playing game supplement published by Columbia Games Inc. for use with HârnMaster. This is a bestiary article.

The supplement is available as a two-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $1.48 but was purchased at a reduced price during a sale.

SwineThe first page of content, Swine, covers the domesticated variety of pigs. They are primarily used as a source of food, as their value as food outweighs that of any other use. They can wander freely and even dispose of garbage. This section details the terminology used to describe them and what they eat; foraging in woodland is a very cost-effective way of bulking up a pig. They are also prolific breeders and many inns keep a sow. Two specific breeds of domestic swine are detailed, and a sidebar has game stats for the domestic swine followed by economic data.

Razorback is the second page and describes the wild pig or wild boar. The razorback is described, together with their ecology and behaviour, and that Lythian nobles favour it as a game animal. The razorback is dangerous, though, and not everyone who hunts them comes back intact. The sidebar shows where they can be found on Hârn, which is pretty much everywhere, and gives their game stats.

Swine in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, with only two pages of content, doesn’t need them. Navigation is fine. The text maintains a single column with sidebar format and appeared to be free of error. There are a couple of, possibly stock, illustrations; one colour and one black and white. Presentation is fine.

This is another of the bestiary articles that cover a limited number of creatures, in this case one with breeds and a second type, in detail. The game stats don’t take up much of the article, so it could be used with other game systems without much difficulty. Primarily, this is a background article for Hârn, and that it does well. Though domestic swine are unlikely to be combat foes, razorbacks could easily be such. Swine can be found by clicking here.
