Sorkin Mountains

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Sorkin Mountains

Sorkin Mountains by Joe Adams and Jonathan Davidson is a role playing game supplement published by Columbia Games Inc. for use with HârnMaster.

The supplement is available as a ten-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $5.48 although it was purchased at a reduced price due to a special discount.

The opening page gives an overview of the mountain range and a sidebar gives the relevant maps and the highest peak.

Sorkin MountainsHistory gives a brief history of the range, which were dominated by the Khuzdul underneath and the Jarin clans on the surface, but both invading Lythians and garguns eroded both.

Present Day gives the current situation in the mountain range.

Geography has a map of the mountain range, divided into five different areas, and an overview of each of those areas.

These five areas are then covered a page at a time. There are details on what and who can be found in the region, including settlements and hazards, and d20 encounter tables.

The Seven Brothers describes a ring of standing stones that are sacred to the Taelda. There is a brief overview of the Taelda, a sidebar on the primary guardian of the circle – there are seven guardians – a map of the stone circle and local area, together with a location key, as well as some adventure hooks.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, although comparatively short, has enough different sections that they would have been useful. Navigation could be better. The text is either a two column or single column with sidebar format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a number of illustrations, both colour and black and white, including the colour maps, and some of them at least appear to be custom. Presentation is good.

Though this is a supplement for HârnMaster, there are no game stats which would make it comparatively easy to use with other systems. Comparatively, because it doesn’t explain what Khuzdul or garguns are; that would need checking with another source. It can be easily guessed that Khuzdul are dwarves and by inference that the gargun are goblinoids of some type; they are the orc equivalent. At full price, this is an expensive supplement, but at the price it was purchased for, it was well worth it. It doesn’t really stand on its own, because it covers a mountainous area that spreads across a lot of Hârn, and really needs integrating with other supplements.
