Silver Way

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Silver Way

Silver Way by Kerry Mould is a role playing game supplement published by Columbia Games Inc. for use with Hârn and HârnMaster.

The supplement is available as a ten-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $6.98 but was purchased at a reduced price during a sale.

Silver WayThe opening paragraphs explain that the Silver Way has been the main route into Azadmere, the kingdom of the Khuzdul, since before humans came to Hârn. It looks at the dangers, both physical and gargun, and explains that Azadmere is the main source for gold. It looks at the exports, primarily silver and gold, and what the dwarves get as imports, as well as imported goods and what is done at different times in the year. Sidebar have the route, the relevant Atlas Maps, distance, time for foot and horse and that it’s impassable by wagon, and give the logistics for caravans using the route.

History gives the route’s history from pre-human times, the retreat of the dwarves to two kingdoms, one of which was destroyed, and the present-day situation, including threats, some of which are countered by the Order of the Lady of Paladins. A map shows the route.

Journey to Zerhun covers the route itself, which is looked at in stages. Naniom Bridge is the last safe stop before Zerhun. The Fork is a junction, Three Valley Gap is another camp, Bridgeway is the third, Kazona Lodge is a poor campsite, Guthe Ford is menaced by gargun, Bungalek is a lush campsite, Longstair is relatively good travelling and Zerhun is the final point. There is also an encounter table for the journey, separated into two stages.

The Ruins of Traketh cover a ruined manor with a map near the Three Valley Gap campsite. There are three adventure hooks related to this.

Silver Way in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation is okay. The text is either single column with sidebar or two column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a variety of colour and black and white illustrations. Presentation is good.

Though this is technically intended for use with HârnMaster, there are no stats, with the closest thing being the encounter table, making this more generally useful. It’s a little too entwined with the Hârn setting, because it’s a trade route, for use elsewhere, with the exception of the ruined manor. This isn’t the most detailed covering of a Hârn trade route, but it’s decent enough with plenty of potential adventure hooks and encounters. Silver Way can be found by clicking here.
