Side Paths – Silver Rebels 1 – Kennels of the Red Fang by Alex Riggs and Joshua Zabackis is a role playing game supplement published by Necromancers of the Northwest for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. This supplement is intended to be used to expand the available adventures in Paizo Publishing‘s Hell’s Rebels Adventure Path, #97 to #102, and it takes place partway through #97, In Hell’s Bright Shadow. The supplement is covered by the Open Game License and some of it is therefore Open Game Content. There is also another supplement for expanding the adventure path, Trails of the Drowned.
The supplement is available at a regular price of $2.99 from RPGNow as a PDF, but was purchased at the reduced price of $2.09. This is a 14 page PDF, of which two pages are the front and back covers, one page is the front matter and one page the Open Game License.
This is a side adventure where the players are contacted by an NPC who wishes them to recover his foo dog companion that was stolen by a tavern owner who runs dogfights, the latter hoping to use the foo dog to help him to breed better fighting animals. Different methods of recovering the dog are covered – appealing to the authorities will not accomplish anything, as this has already been tried, and, in the official Adventure Path setting, the authorities themselves are corrupt, have been bribed by the NPC foe and dogfighting itself is legal. There is only one real location in the adventure, the Red Fang tavern, where the foo dog is captive and where the dogfights are held.
Side Paths – Silver Rebels 1 – Kennels of the Red Fang in Review
The PDF is very well bookmarked, considering its size, with, by the looks of it, every major and minor section included. Navigation is, even with the lack of a contents, rather above average for a supplement of this size. The supplement has a two column layout, with a colour background and cover, and almost all of it is text, with no illustrations and two black maps of the Red Fang tavern. The text itself is largely error free, and there is a lot for the PDF’s size.
There are notes on integrating the adventure into the Adventure Path itself, including precisely where it is supposed to be run and how it may affect the path as a whole, as there are things such as notoriety regarding the Adventure Path and a successful conclusion leads to a minor ally, who can help with recruiting. The supplement could be used, with some tweaking, in another setting; the various references to the Hell’s Rebels path would need ignoring and the tavern would need placing in another suitable city. The city in question would need a similar level of corruption and for dogfighting to be legal too for it to be used with the least amount of modification.
Overall, Kennels of the Red Fang is a decent addition to the Hell’s Rebels path, and provides a side adventure that can be a bit of a diversion and which can also help the main path as well.
