Shadow World: The Haunted Village

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Shadow World: The Haunted Village

Shadow World: The Haunted Village by Terry K. Amthor is a role playing game supplement published by Iron Crown Enterprises for use with Rolemaster. This is a brief adventure set in the upcoming region of Emer IV on Shadow World.

The supplement is available as a 12 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. About a quarter of a page is the Credits.

The adventure requires the characters to get to the titular village, and the easiest way is through a Jinteni portal; the Jinteni being a long dead technomagical civilisation who created portals across Emer as well as in Jaiman, Agyra and Thuul.

Shadow World: The Haunted VillageA region map shows where the village is in Emer, then there is a map of the arrival portal and the surrounding ruins. This area is then described.

The village is also mapped and described; most of the villagers are now dead and many of the buildings are ruined or damaged. A sample residence is also mapped and described.

Sidebars cover two of the peoples found in southwest Emer and the various people that could be encountered in the region are mentioned, including undead.

Creatures that have moved in are next and finally the construct, a war machine created by the Worim to fight the Jinteni, is covered. This may seem like a golem but it has more in common with a robot. There is also an encounter chart, divided into the portal and vicinity and the village.

Gaming Details follows a standard adventure format for Rolemaster with a number of scenes, including a couple of optional ones at the end that could expand the encounter.

The final four pages are NPC and beast charts, two pages for Rolemaster 2 and Classic, two pages for Rolemaster Standard System and Rolemaster Fantasy Roleplay.

Shadow World: The Haunted Village in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, although not lengthy, there are enough sections that these would have been appreciated. Navigation could be better. The text, apart from the charts, follows a two-column colour format and appeared to be free of error. There are various maps – player versions would have been nice – and a couple of colour illustrations. Presentation is good.

For those unused to how Rolemaster adventures end to be set out, this may seem a little odd, as the adventure part itself is simply a handful of briefly described scenes. The GM uses the information provided to run the adventure through these; it perhaps requires a little more effort to run than adventures in some systems. For those who are used to it, and Shadow World – which has strong elements of technology – this should function well to get characters to the upcoming new region. Shadow World: The Haunted Village is a nice little adventure for Shadow World and it can be found by clicking here.
