Robes of Useful Items

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Robes of Useful Items

Robes of Useful Items by Creighton Broadhurst is a role playing game supplement published by Raging Swan Press for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some of it is considered to be Open Game Content.

The supplement is available as a 17-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $1.99 although it was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle, with two pages being the front and rear covers, four the front matter and Contents and Open Game License and one is an ad. The PDF comes in two versions, one intended for print and high-end devices, one intended for low-end and mobile.

Robes of Useful ItemsThe opening paragraphs talk about the robe of bones, a wondrous item that’s difficult or time consuming to use, and that this supplement contains six variant robes.

Variant Robes of Useful Items has other options for the different robes. These are cursed robes, and identifying them, as well as greater or lesser robes. Greater robes can regenerate patches and lesser robes have fewer patches and are therefore cheaper to make.

Random Potions and Scrolls has random tables for determining such on a robe.

The seven different robes each follow a standard format, with name, description, who uses it, identification, activation and use, which lists the things it can summon, construction, destruction and stat blocks for the creatures, if appropriate.

The robe of battle has items and creatures appropriate for combat.

The robe of delving focuses on exploring underground.

The robe of exploration is useful for wilderness exploration.

The robe of faith concentrates on clerical items.

The robe of the sea has useful items related to oceanic travel.

The robe of thievery has thief-related items and is notable for being the only one with no creatures.

The robe of useful items is the standard robe.

The final page of content, Reading Stat Blocks is a standard page for the publisher explaining how to use these.

Robes of Useful Items in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with everything except sidebars linked. The Contents only covers the main sections and is hyperlinked. Navigation is good. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a couple of stock black and white illustrations. Presentation is okay.

This supplement has a range of robes that have different focuses of items on them giving them different usages and sometimes benefiting specific classes rather than being generally useful. Though such robes are probably not as useful as some types of robes, despite their name, and can often be replaced with bags of holding for instance, they do have their uses.
