Robes of Summoning by Creighton Broadhurst is a role playing game supplement published by Raging Swan Press for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some of it is considered to be Open Game Content.
The supplement is available as an 18-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $1.99 although it was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle, with two pages being the front and rear covers, four the front matter and Contents and Open Game License and one is an ad. The PDF comes in two versions, one intended for print and high-end devices, one intended for low-end and mobile.
The opening paragraphs talk about the robe of bones, a wondrous item that’s difficult or time consuming to use, and that it summons undead, something a character may not be keen to do, and that this supplement contains four variant robes.
The five different robes each follow a standard format, with name, description, who uses it, identification, activation and use, which lists the things it can summon, construction, destruction and stat blocks for the summoned creatures.
The robe of bones is the standard item and summons bloody goblin skeletons, fast human zombies, heavy horse skeletons, human skeletons, ogre plague skeletons and wolf skeletons.
The robe of animals summons dire rats, giant frogs, wolves, wolfhounds, wolverines and young venomous snakes.
The robe of caves summons chokers, darkmantles, fire beetles, giant centipedes, giant cockroaches and giant spiders.
The robe of vermin summons fire beetles, giant centipedes, giant spiders, poisonous frogs, rat swarms and spider swarms.
The robe of the waves summons dolphins, octopi, stingrays, sharks, snapping turtles and squid.
Robes of Summoning in Review
The PDF is bookmarked with everything except sidebars linked. The Contents only covers the main sections and is hyperlinked. Navigation is good. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. The same stock black and white illustration is used for every robe. Presentation is okay.
The robes have a variety of uses and add an interesting assortment of magic items for characters to use. Perhaps the biggest gripe is the overlap between the robe of caves and the robe of vermin; there are some similar, and in a couple of cases identical, creatures summoned by both, making them less interesting.
