Riders of the Wind by Robert J. Schwalb is a role playing game supplement published by Schwalb Entertainment for use with Shadow of the Demon Lord. This supplement details the centaur as a player ancestry; however, it is not in the Victims of the Demon Lord series like those supplements that expand on existing ancestries but part of the Poisoned Pages series.
This is a four page supplement that is available from DriveThruRPG for $1.49 but was purchased at the reduced price of $0.73 during a sale. Around half of the first page is an illustration and a quarter the Credits.
There is a brief mention of the Endless Steppe that lies to the west of the Shield Mountains, the home of the centaurs who have shattered every attempt to conquer the land. The centaur is a new ancestry and is described as being more powerful than those ancestries in the core book and have special rules to make the compatible with other characters.
Centaur is the main part of the supplement and is modelled on the way the ancestries are set out in the core book and other supplements, with the usual description, age, build, origins and personality tables as well as abilities gained at the various levels.
There is a new Master path, Horse Archer. Although originating with the elves and picked up by the Woad, the centaurs are, perhaps unsurprisingly, the most skilled at it.
Finally there are three New Creatures, all centaurs, the archer, champion and wind-caller.
Riders of the Wind in Review
The PDF lacks bookmarks and, at only four pages, does not need them. The text maintains a two column format and no errors were noticed. Other than the half page illustration there is only a single piece of filler art but given the supplement’s length, presentation is very good.
Do not expect the level of detail that there is on an ancestry in the Victims of the Demon Lord series. This is a simple, short supplement with a new ancestry; there are not the dozens of tables expanding on the ancestry seen in those supplements (perhaps there will be at some point). This is simply a new ancestry presented in the same way as those in other supplements. This supplement is short, to the point and does exactly what it is supposed to do – allow players to have centaur characters. Riders of the Wind can be found by clicking here.
