Random Encounters: Wilderness II

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Random Encounters: Wilderness II

Random Encounters: Wilderness II is a role playing game supplement published by Raging Swan Press for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 23-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $3.99 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. Two pages are the front and rear covers, one is an ad, one the front matter, one the Contents, stat blocks by CR and, encounters by EL and one about the designers and one the Open Game License. The PDF comes in two versions, one optimised for print and high-end devices and the other for low end devices and mobile.

Random Encounters: Wilderness IIThis is a collection of eight wilderness encounters, each taking up two pages and all set in deserts. The encounters have a variety of different levels of challenge and danger and each is self-contained, with all the needed stats. The precise details included in each encounter vary, though each has an opening description, tactics, area features and scaling details.

The Carrion Hunter has the characters encountering a vulture lycanthrope.

Children of the Sky has them encountering air elementals too small to be a threat.

Creeping Coins is a ghost who continually counts his hoard.

Desert Rose is an encounter with assassin vines.

Lenate the Lovesick has a gargoyle luring people in to where an object is still animated.

Mojepe’s Grove is a grove of cacti protected by an awakened cactus.

The Sting of Sun and Sand is an encounter with giant scorpions.

The Vulture King is the leader of the remains of a band of tengu.

Random Encounters: Wilderness II in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with major sections linked. The Contents is to a similar level of depth. Navigation is adequate. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a number of stock black and white illustrations. Presentation is okay.

The supplement has a collection of encounters all aimed at desert terrain that could be used to enliven a journey, though it would probably have been better titled as Random Encounters: Desert. Some of the encounters are interesting, but a few seem rather standard; there isn’t much to make them stand out, even if sometimes the creatures are unusual. Random Encounters: Wilderness II is an okay collection of encounters and it can be found by clicking here.
