Random Encounters: Wilderness

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Random Encounters: Wilderness

Random Encounters: Wilderness is a role playing game supplement published by Raging Swan Press for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 28-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $3.99 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. Two pages are the front and rear covers, one is an ad, one the Contents and front matter, two pages stat blocks by CR, encounters by EL and about the designers, one a standard page on Reading Stat Blocks and one the Open Game License. The PDF comes in two versions, one optimised for print and high-end devices and the other for low end devices and mobile.

Random Encounters: WildernessThe supplement features ten different wilderness encounters, each taking up two pages. There are a variety of different types of encounters, with different levels of challenge, and not all of them are combat. Each is self-contained enough with various needed stats and rules. Though the precise details of an encounter can vary, all have area descriptions and rules for scaling.

Canoes and Crocodiles has a crocodile attack when on the water.

Death-Dealer of the Gloaming Hills has someone who is not what they seem.

Hunters as Bait has the characters used by one monster to attack others.

Lost Love has someone being lured to their doom.

Mourning Monster has a monster protecting the body of their mistress.

Secrets of the Swamp has creatures being kidnapped and turned into zombies.

Stuck in the Mud is a priest who needs a hand.

Terror from the Soil has a wasp infestation.

The Ants Go Marching In has a faun going to be killed by ants.

The Grey Grove is an area affected by something draining it of life.

Random Encounters: Wilderness in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with major and minor sections linked and only sidebars missing. The Contents is to a similar level of depth and is hyperlinked. The text maintains a two-column format and appears to be free of errors. There are some stock black and white illustrations, up to full page in size. Presentation is okay.

This supplement has a collection of encounters of different types that can be used to enliven a journey. There are a range of terrains and encounter types, although most are combat, and each has enough detail to make them an interesting little encounter rather than just an entry on a table. Random Encounters: Wilderness is a useful collection of encounters and it can be found by clicking here.
