Outdoor Encounter Cards by Philip Reed is a generic role playing game supplement published by Philip Reed Games.
The supplement is available as a 12-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $5, as printed cards for $15 or as PDF and cards for $15. The PDF is the version reviewed although it was purchased at a reduced price thanks to a special offer. It also comes with a zip file containing 36 card images and a card back image.
The first page of the PDF has instructions on how to use the content as well as a tuckbox design that can be printed out. Unfortunately, the tuckbox is in the middle of a large area of black, making it wasteful on ink to print out, unless this can be removed in a graphics program.
The next six pages has what is effectively a d66 table of outdoor events. Each is given a name, a piece of descriptive text and some details for the GM.
Following this are three pages having the same results, each to an individual card with a stock image.
The final page of content just has card backs.
Outdoor Encounter Cards in Review
The PDF lacks bookmarks and, though not essential, especially if the cards are printed, would have been appreciated. Navigation is okay. The text is in tables and cards and appeared to be free of errors. Each card has a piece of black and white stock art, as does the back. Presentation is decent.
This is a useful, though not cheap, collection of fantasy encounter cards that can provide inspiration for the GM. As they are system neutral, some more work will be needed to use them; there are suggestions for each encounter as to what the GM will need, but this will need tailoring by chosen system. Printed out, they make a nice little addition as well, though the content is comparatively minimal. This doesn’t make them useless; just a bit on the high side at full price.
