On The Brink by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with Cepheus Engine. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.
The supplement is available as a 25 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three the front matter and three the Open Game License.
The introductory paragraphs explain that tensions have been rising between the Ilsunsi Directorate and the Olonsean Empire in the Sonora sector – the adventure is set in the Frontiers of Space, though this is not outright stated – and an Olonsean base has recently been built in an Olonsean system, but in a threatening location. The characters are approached by a representative of the Ilsunsi Directorate to destroy the base, but leaving clues behind that point to another group annoyed with the Olonsean Empire, so as not to spark a shooting war.
Patron has details on the person offering the job.
Complications has things that can go wrong with the job.
Patrols in the System is a ship that will confront intruders.
Fighter Craft and Ground Patrols Around the Approaches to the Base are defences closer to the base itself.
The Mountain is where the base is located.
The Base details the facility itself.
Control Tower Personnel, Mechanics, Dual Laser Cannon Personnel, Plasma Cannon Personnel, Command Personnel, The Garrison, Fighter Pilots and Small Ship Crew Members take up much of the supplement and are stats for them.
Other Space Craft Present is other vessels that might be in the area.
Bomb Placement is the best location to plant the explosives.
Clues as to Who Done It are various things the characters might leave behind to throw off suspicion from the Ilsunsi.
Ilsunsi Assassination Team are a potential hit squad sent after the characters.
Mission Completion Objectives are what’s needed for success.
The final page of content is a map of the facility.
On the Brink in Review
The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that they would have been useful. The text maintains a single column format and appeared to be mostly free of errors. The text follows a single column format and appeared to be mostly free of errors. Bar the cover and map, there are no illustrations. Presentation is adequate.
Much of this supplement, as is common, is taken up with needlessly large amounts of stats. Most of the people encountered could easily be grouped together; they don’t really need separate stats as if encountered they will essentially be shooting and don’t need to be individuals. The adventure is, as it states in it, quite dangerous. Plus, as is also unfortunately common, the patron may decide to backstab the characters. On the Brink is an okay adventure and it can be found by clicking here.
