On Air (New edition)

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement On Air (New edition)

On Air (New edition) by Quico Vicens-Picatto is a role playing game supplement published by Chaosium Inc. through the Miskatonic Repository Community Content Programme for use with Call of Cthulhu, the horror role playing game based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft. This is an adventure for the 1920s.

On Air (New edition)The supplement is available as a 16 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, one the front matter and one the table of contents.

1 Keeper’s Information explains that a radio programme called The Witching Hour starts at 12:00 AM and features call-ins. On this particular night, a Star-Spawn of Cthulhu and several hundred deep ones have come out of the ocean near Kingsport and are heading to Arkham using fog as cover with the intent of raiding the Miskatonic University campus for various items.

2 Cronology is a list of calls, the time they happen and what is happening during them.

3. Characters has some pre-generated characters, who are the people on the radio show.

4. Encounters has a d12 table of encounters during the night.

5. Surroundings of Arkham has the inhabitants of Dunwich heading to plunder the city.

6 Mapa has a map of the radio station.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is short enough that these are not needed but would have been useful. The table of contents lists the major sections. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a two-column format and some errors were noticed. There are a number of custom colour illustrations. Presentation is decent.

The big problem this supplement has is that it’s not clear what it’s supposed to be. There’s a massive attack on Arkham that will destroy a large portion of the city and there doesn’t appear to be any way of stopping it from happening. It’s not even clear what the characters are supposed to do. Go out and get killed? Come up with some way of stopping the Star Spawn? As is, this is just presented as a list of events that results in great destruction. This could really have done with some more explanation. On Air (New edition) is, as presented, not even really a scenario, and it can be found by clicking here.
