Mr. M's Equipment Emporium

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Mr. M’s Equipment Emporium

Mr. M’s Equipment Emporium by Tom Stephens is a role playing game supplement published by New Frontier Games. This is a generic supplement aimed at futuristic settings and is part of the Two Sheet Locations series.

The supplement is available for Pay What You Want from DriveThruRPG. It consists of a five-page PDF, of which one page is the front cover, and a zip file. The zip file contains four PNG maps, one of the residence and one of the store, each with and without a grid, as well as a read me file.

Mr. M's Equipment EmporiumThe proprietor, the titular Mr. M (the supplement is likely named after Mr Magorium’s Wonder Emporium) runs a store on a space station. With it being system neutral, no stats are given, only an overview of what his skills are. This is followed by a description of the store itself, security measures and Mr. M’s residence above the store.

Buying and Selling at the Emporium explains that Mr. M likes goods with an interesting history, and gives his typical percentages for both buying and selling, both of which can be affected by a good story. Mr. M will also value items brought to him. Game Integration gives some ideas as to how the characters could encounter Mr. M.

One and a half pages are then taken up by labelled maps of the store and residence, duplicated from the PNG files, and the final page is a key to the labels.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, at this length, doesn’t need them. Navigation is fine. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. The illustrations consist of the shop’s sign and the maps. The maps don’t look very futuristic and, in fact, a point is made that the residence is unusually floored in hardwood. Which works as both a sign of wealth and means that a wood texture can be used for the floor.

This is a simple enough location that could be dropped into a space station with little work; simply provide the game stats. It could even be dropped into a fantasy setting, too, with only a bit more work, as the maps don’t look terribly futuristic. Mr. M’s Equipment Emporium is a decent short location for filling a gap and it can be found by clicking here.
