Monstrous Lair #1: Owlbear Nest by Mike Welham is a role playing game supplement published by Raging Swan Press. This is a system-neutral supplement but it is still covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.
The supplement is available as an 8-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $1.45 but it was purchased at a reduced price during a sale. Two pages are the front and rear covers, two pages are taken up by illustrations and one by the Open Game License. The PDF comes in two versions, one optimised for print and high-end devices and the other for mobile and low-end.
The first page is taken up by the front matter, Contents and Using this Product. The assumption is made that the GM already has a map or will be designing one on the fly, has stat blocks and will roll once on each table.
The meat of the supplement is two pages containing seven d10 tables. These would be rolled on to enhance an owlbear nest and its occupant. Each entry on each table is a short, one or two sentence description. The tables cover what’s outside the nest, what the owlbear is doing, notable features, minor features, what the owlbear looks like, what treasure it has and what trinkets can be found.
Monstrous Lair #1: Owlbear Nest in Review
The PDF, despite being short, is fully bookmarked and the Contents covers the major sections. Navigation is excellent. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be free of errors. There is a single piece of appropriate black and white stock art.
This short supplement provides a nice bunch of options for enlivening an owlbear encounter. They range from terrain details to odd behaviour to bits of treasure. All in all, a nice little supplement for adding detail to an encounter. Monstrous Lair #1: Owlbear Nest is definitely recommended and can be found by clicking here.
