Monster Menagerie: Oceans of Blood by Sam Hing is a role playing game supplement published by Rogue Genius Games for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result. This is a small, ocean-themed bestiary, part of the Monster Menagerie series. The supplement is also available in a version for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition.
The supplement is available from DriveThruRPG as a 12-page PDF for $3.99 but was purchased at a greatly reduced price as part of a special bundle. One page is the front cover and one pages is the Open Game License and Credits.
The single page Foreword has some notes on the sea as a source of danger, in myth, legend, history, entertainment and games, with recommendations to look up the appropriate rules in the Pathfinder Core Rulebook.
Next are the monsters; there are nine new ones, with one per page, in alphabetical order.
The Anemone Behemoth is an enormous, anemone-headed humanoid creature that is dangerous and seems to be unintelligent, but has a habit of arranging stones in patterns.
The Dracopus is an octopid-creature with a dragon’s head where the octopus’s beak would be, and has a breath weapon.
The Harpoon Weed is an unintelligent plant that attempts to harpoon anything passing – even if that thing is far vaster than it is.
The Lashray is a creature similar to a manta ray that possesses half a dozen poisonous lashes. There is a bit on how if lashrays can be taken before they are born, they can be trained, yet they are born live. This is a little unclear and could do with clarifying; it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense for something not born from an egg.
The Piranha-Man is just what is sounds like; a humanoid piranha.
Razor Shoals are shoals of fish with have sharp blades on their spine.
The Sarcophagus Clam is an enormous clam that can swallow creatures whole.
Toothwraiths are the undead forms of apex ocean predators, and are more intelligent than their living counterparts.
Wave Horses are creatures of elemental water that live on the surface and look like horses.
Monster Menagerie: Oceans of Blood in Review
The PDF lacks bookmarks and, although not long, they would have been appreciated. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a two-column colour format and appeared to be free of errors. Rather nicely, every single monster has a full colour illustration of it. Presentation is excellent.
The supplement does what it says; provides a bunch of new creatures to use in the ocean realms to trouble characters. They cover a range of CRs, types and intelligences, providing a range of threats. Monster Menagerie: Oceans of Blood is a nice little bestiary and it can be found by clicking here.
