A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement MindExplorer

MindExplorer is a role playing game written and published by Michael Klamerus.

The supplement is available as a five-page PDF from itch.io for $2 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. One page is the front cover.

MindExplorerA World of Unlimited Imagination explains that this is a single player role playing game inspired by educational materials from the 1990s in which you explore a building constructed from your imagination during a dream.

Inspiration explains this uses the Encartacore or Utopian Scholastic, which emphasised education and had an optimistic outlook.

Setup explains it’s for one person and played as long as desired. It explains it uses four custom Art Dice, but they don’t appear to be available on the referenced page and aren’t described, and a hex grid.

Starting the Game explains that the four Art Dice are assigned to four prompts which are answered before entering a building.

Exploring Your Mind has each hex be a new room, with four prompts answered after rolling the Art Dice for inspiration.

The final page of content has a hex grid.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is short enough that it doesn’t need them. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a single column format and appeared to be free of errors. There are a number of colour illustrations. Presentation is decent.

As this is essentially a solo journalling game with no definite endpoint, it will not be for everyone. Moreover, the lack of a description of what the faces on the Art Dice are, and that they don’t seem to be available, greatly limits the ability to play the game. It would be possible for a player to create their own, but knowing what they looked like would have helped. MindExplorer can be found by clicking here.
