A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Locale: Personal Enhancement Centre

Locale: Personal Enhancement Centre is a role playing game supplement written and published by Michael Brown. This is a short location supplement intended for use with Cepheus Engine or Traveller.

This is a three page PDF which is available from RPGNow for $1.25 but which was purchased at the reduced price of $1.04. One page of this is the Open Game License.

Personal Enhancement Centres, or PECs, are dedicated to enhancing personal beauty and attractiveness. A list of the various offerings is described, as well as their typical clientele, and their origin on 20th century Earth as beauty salons catering to women. Since then, they have diversified and used other technology.

Locale: Personal Enhancement CentreWhere PECs can be found – which is pretty much everywhere – and their staff, prices and services are next, with a list of various services and what they cost as well as how these should be modified depending on the world. Tech Level, law and culture also affect what is available.

Most of the second page describes a sample PEC, called Bella’s. There is a black and white map of the location, descriptions of what can be found in each place, details on three NPCs and on equipment available.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, at two pages, does not really need them. The text maintains a two column format and no errors were noticed. However, there may be a problem with the font. The version that was read on a tablet was in an absolutely terrible font – one really only suitable for headings – that made it extremely difficult to read. The same version read on a PC was in Arial, which was fine. Perhaps there is a problem with font embedding. The sole illustration is a black and white map of Bella’s.

This is the first location published by Michael Brown and it can be used to provide somewhere that characters might visit, whether as part of adventure, to spruce up their image for something important (at the GM’s discretion, using a PEC could provide a bonus) or as simply somewhere to visit. As such, it is a cheap, easy, adequately described location with plenty of details for creating more such. Locale: Personal Enhancement Centre can be found by clicking here.
