Kos Island

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Kos Island

Kos Island is a role playing game supplement published by Skirmisher Publishing. This is a generic supplement and the third book for the Swords of Kos Fantasy Setting.

The supplement is available from RPGNow for $2.99 but was purchased at a reduced price of $0.01 as part of a special bundle. The supplement consists of two PDFs. The main book has 37 pages, with two being the front and rear covers, two being the front matter, two being the Table of Contents and one being an ad for other supplements. The second PDF is a single page and is a map of the island.

Kos IslandThe Introduction is the first five pages of content and describes the setting and origins. Bar the opening paragraph, which is specific to Kos Island, this material has been duplicated from Kos City.

This is followed by a two page map of Kos Island, which duplicated the map in the second PDF.

The Island of Kos starts with an overview of the island itself, followed by brief descriptions of some nearby places.

Towns & Villages of Kos describes the various settlements on Kos, other than Kos City. These places are named, given their typical population, the industries found there and their symbols.

Specific Places of Kos Island describes various different places. These are of different types; geographical features, locations, military bases, taverns, prisons and, in one case, a travelling carnival. Each has its name, the type of location, a description and one or more adventure hooks.

Kos Island in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with the major sections and individually described locations all linked. The Table of Contents is to a similar level of detail and also hyperlinked. Some of the subsections are not linked; navigation is generally good, but it could be better.

The text maintains a single column format and appeared almost entirely free of errors. There are a number of illustrations, including a number of, probably stock, photos that have been filtered to make them look less like photographs, up to a full page in size, some stock black and white illustrations and a couple of custom images. Presentation is okay.

This is a useful companion volume to Kos City, describing the area around it. Kos Island is small enough that it can easily be dropped into almost any appropriate setting; all that’s needed is a bit of water. There are a few references to off-island places, but these are generally easy to change. No matter what the setting used is, stats will need generating for any NPCs or others. There is a decent amount of interconnectivity on the island, with references to NPCs and organisations in one location tying in to another location. Kos Island is a nice little supplement and can be found by clicking here.
