Kai’s Scoundrels gives an overview of the six Scoundrels, a group of smugglers, before covering their history. Kai turned to smuggling after encountering a gnoll smuggler and then the two found the rest. The smugglers’ operation is covered, along with safe houses and bolt-holes and some details on the sort of contacts they have. Their tactics in combat, which is usually running away unless prevented from doing so, the tactics they use for smuggling operations and the sort of smuggler’s gear they have.
Persona: “Killer” Kai Linnow describes the leader, a baron’s daughter whose father was murdered by his brother and mercenaries, along with her personality, mannerisms, distinguishing features, adventure hooks, relations with the others and tactics, along with her stats.
Persona: Marra Brandywine covers the halfling in the same way, with her stats and the stats for her eidolon, Black Shuck.
Persona: “Captain” LeVar covers the sailor who was infected with lycanthropy and is a wereshark.
Persona: Marrowsplitter covers the gnoll and his animal companion.
Persona: Mercutsio covers the half elf.
Persona: Torn Tusk: covers the final member, a half-orc.
Sidebars cover lore to be discovered about the Scoundrels, how to use them in your own campaign, several encounters with the Scoundrels, some notes on Sleight of Hand and Perception and how much money the Scoundrels might have to hand.
Kai’s Scoundrels in Review
The PDF is bookmarked with everything except sidebars linked. The Contents is less thorough and is hyperlinked. Navigation is good. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be mostly free of errors. There are a number of stock black and white illustrations. Presentation is decent.
The supplement is included in the Scions of Evil compilation, which is a more cost-effective way of buying it. The Scoundrels themselves are an interesting group, because they are not entirely evil, and in truth they are more businessfolk whose business is illegal than anything else. Given this, it is entirely possible that the characters may encounter them as someone providing a service the characters need, rather than a foe, unless they have been tasked to track down a smuggling operation and put an end to it.
