Items of Adventure – The Severed Tentacle by Alfred Bonnabel is a generic role playing game supplement published by Double Tome Studios.
The supplement is available as a four-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $0.99 but was purchased at a reduced price thanks to a special offer. One page is the front cover, one the front matter.
The Severed Tentacle starts with a physical description of the item, which is a staff that has a living, severed tentacle at its tip. The staff’s properties are then covered; it has a connection with salt water and glows purple when immersed in it at night.
Following this are three story hooks for adding the item into a game. These three story hooks are completely different in nature and are intended as a means of getting the staff into the characters’ hands. Next are three plot threads that can be used with the staff once it has been introduced into the game; they don’t have to be paired with a specific story hook and are hooks for creating adventures based around the staff.
Items of Adventure – The Severed Tentacle in Review
The PDF lacks bookmarks and, with only two pages of actual content, doesn’t need them. Navigation is fine. The text maintains a single column format and appeared to be free of error. There is a single stock illustration of the staff. Presentation is fine.
Though the staff is magical, it isn’t, strictly speaking, a magic item, merely an item with magical properties. It doesn’t do anything truly spectacular, only appearing to pull towards salt water and glowing in it, being odd more than anything as written. Instead, the staff is intended to be a way to seed an adventure based around it. Some of the plot threads have uses that require the staff, such as summoning an ancient entity. Essentially, this is a portable adventure hook rather than a magical item. Items of Adventure – The Severed Tentacle can be found by clicking here.
