Into the Violet Vale by Monte Cook is a role playing game supplement published by Monte Cook Games for use with Numenera. This is an adventure for the setting.
The supplement is available as a 25-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $4.99 but was purchased at a reduced price as part of a special bundle. One page is the front cover and one is ads.
The Introduction starts with background about a woman called Sinter who has been leading a group against the local ruler. This group was doing well, until it was discovered that Sinter wasn’t human, but a construct, and the group fell apart. The lord wants Sinter returning alive, and has apprehended the families and loved ones of six people who had the skills needed to bring her back. These six are the PCs.
It follows with a synopsis of the adventure, how the GM should prepare for it, details on Sinter, who starts the adventure already captured, and on the Violet Vale, including details on the peculiar flower known as regale which shifts creatures through time and space. There is a map showing the local area.
Into the Violet Vale is the adventure. There is a small map of the vale and descriptions as to how the PCs find it, after coming across an abandoned camp belonging to Sinter’s followers. The characters will need to work out how to get out of the vale whilst avoiding a predatory creature. What happens to Sinter afterwards isn’t determined; this was a convention scenario and it’s up to the GM to determine how to integrate it into a campaign.
The next 12 pages are six double-sided pre-generated character sheets.
Into the Violet Vale in Review
The PDF is bookmarked, but not helpfully. Navigation could be better. The text maintains the standard two columns with sidebar colour format, with the sidebars for additional information and references to other material, and appeared to be free of error. There are a number of colour illustrations; bar the maps, these appear to be custom. Presentation is good.
This is a straightforward enough adventure. The characters have been forced into doing a mission by the lord, but fortunately this happens before the adventure starts, rather than them being railroaded during it. The adventure might work better as a campaign starter rather than one integrated into an existing campaign as a result. There are threads that could be picked up by the GM for development, but that is entirely up to the GM. The adventure may work best as what it was intended to be, as a one-shot.
