A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Insupposable Instruments

Insupposable Instruments is a role playing game supplement published by Schwalb Entertainment for use with Shadow of the Demon Lord. This is part of the Poisoned Pages series and has new items.

The supplement is available from DriveThruRPG as a 15-page PDF for $2.99 although it was purchased at a reduced price during a sale. Approximately three quarters of a page are the front illustration and Credits.

The opening paragraphs explain that, whilst Lij may be the City of Wonders, there are other items that can be found across the continent.

Insupposable InstrumentsAlchemical Items has 20 new items for alchemy, which was introduced in the Demon Lord’s Companion. These range from paste that provides a better grip for climbing to powder that creates water to slippery residues created from oozes.

Forbidden Items has eight new forbidden items, which have benefits but also consequences for using. There are explosives made from heads, a death ray that obliterates creatures and pockets made from skin.

Potions has six new potions that do things make creatures berserk to make them appear to be old.

Adventuring Gear and Tools has 32 new mundane items from chain to plague masks to gloves with built in lockpick pockets and garrottes.

Marvels of Engineering has 12 new engineering items, from a clockwork limb that is superior to the mechanical one in Battle Scars to memory steel weapons to map tables.

Animal Companions simply lists the prices of 14 new creatures together with what stats to use.

Animal Gear has nine new items.

Vehicles has seven new vehicles, from cable cars to walking cabins.

Property has the costs of eight different types of residence.

Owning a Business has some brief rules on such and how they will generate money, with different sizes and types.

Finally, Wandering Merchant Table is a d20 table (although one entry is missing) of merchants to encounter on the road. Details of what they might have and of any guards are given.

The PDF lacks bookmarks and, given the length and different sections, these would have been useful. Navigation is poor. The text maintains a two column colour format and the primary error noticed was, as mentioned earlier, that the d20 table of merchants is missing an entry. There are a number of colour illustrations, up to the half page front illustration in size, and some black and white filler. Some of the illustrations may be custom. Presentation is good.

This is essentially a collection of new equipment of different types and related material rather than a supplement focusing on something specific. It provides new options and new items for characters to use, from mundane to magical, from small to large. It’s not exactly a collection of wonders, but it does function well as a small equipment catalogue. Insupposable Instruments can be found by clicking here.
