Hunter and Hunted

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Hunter and Hunted

Hunter and Hunted by Florian Klamt is a role playing game published by Chaosium Inc. through the Miskatonic Repository Community Content Programme for use with Call of Cthulhu, the horror role playing game based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft.

The supplement is available as a 13 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. One page is the front cover, one the Credits and half the Table of Contents.

Hunter and HuntedThe Introduction explains that the adventure is aimed at 3-5 investigators, is set in the remote Rocky Mountains, where they have been invited on a hunting trip, and is ideally set in the 1920s to 1930s. It can also be played with the standard rules or with pulp.

Background gives some information on the Gray Tigers, a group of hunters who not only hunt beasts but also humans and Mythos entities too. The latter has not had a good effect on the survivors. The Gray Tigers come from Pulp Cthulhu. Information is also given on Ithaqua, a Great Old One.

Dramatis Personae gives details on important NPC; the hunt’s leader, who is not what he seems, his follower and other more briefly described guests. Details on the valley where the hunt takes place are also given.

To Adventure! starts with some read aloud text to begin the adventure. The investigators arrive at a hunting lodge, where they will be told how the hunt is, supposedly, going down. There are also some basics on hunting.

The Hunt is On is the main part of the adventure, which isn’t linear. There are various encounters the characters could have, and various things they can discover.

The Curtain Unveiled is when the characters discover they are not hunters but the hunted; again, this isn’t linear, with various optional things to happen.

Conclusion & Rewards wraps up the adventure.

Appendix has stats for weapons and the NPCs.

Hunter and Hunted in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. The Table of Contents covers the major sections and is hyperlinked. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a two-column format and appeared to be mostly free of errors. There are a number of stock colour photos. Presentation is okay.

This may not be the easiest adventure to run for those without a lot of Keeper experience, as it’s very free form, with no map and no locations for encounters. It’s a very sandbox adventure, though it naturally has a definite start and finish. It has the potential to be dangerous, as the investigators are not near any source of help, including medical care, and will need to defeat the enemy to have a hope of getting away. Hunter and Hunted is a decent little adventure and it can be found by clicking here.
