Horses by Chris J. Van Tighem and Tom Dalgliesh is a role playing game supplement published by Columbia Games Inc. for use with Hârn and HârnMaster. This is a bestiary article.
The supplement is available as a 10-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $4.99 but was purchased at a reduced price during a sale.
The first page explains that horses are the most popular means of transport for nobility on Hârn and there are a variety raised from native breeds, with three indigenous ones, and five from Lythia.
The second page has details on horses in different countries of Hârn and the sidebar has a glossary of horse-related terms.
The rest of the supplement is taken up by details on different types of canines, one to a page with details related to Hârn and the breeds, with the sidebar giving the HârnMaster stats, as well as a map showing where in Hârn or Lythia the breeds originate.
Chelni or Hârnic pony is a small breed indigenous to Hârn used by the Chelni tribes.
Hodiri, or Hârnic horse, is related to the Chelni but taller and is used by the Hodiri.
Khanset, or Ketari horse, is a light cavalry horse that are protective of their owners.
Lankum, or Quarphor horse, is popular as a palfrey or light charger.
Hacherdad, or forest horse, is prised as a noble mount for woodland and forest hunting.
Reksyni, or plains horse, is a large cavalry mount.
Donkey, or the shepherd, is a sturdy animal often used to protect sheep.
Unicorn, or the Shava Horse, is the third Hârnic breed, larger than a Hodiri horse and with a single horn.
Horses in Review
The PDF lacks bookmarks and, though short, is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a single column with sidebar format and appeared to be free of error. There are a number of black and white illustrations, including one for each dog described. Presentation is fine.
This is part of a series of Hârn supplements that cover a single creature, including ordinary ones, in detail. As it is a bestiary article, with HârnMaster stats, it is less useful for other systems, although there is quite a lot of information on the horses used in Hârn, and where they come from.
