Hagard's General Store

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Hagard’s General Store

Hagard’s General Store by Joseph Mohr is a role playing game supplement published by Old School Role Playing for use with OSRIC. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 20 page Pay What You Want PDF from DriveThruRPG. Two pages are the front and rear covers, three the front matter and three the Open Game License.

Hagard's General StoreThe opening paragraphs explain that stores selling general goods are common in all settlements, and that this supplement has one that can be dropped in just about anywhere.

GM Notes explains stores like this can be quite different depending on their location; the stock may vary and in small settlements they may be the only store.

What’s For Sale? has the goods for sale. This has different lists for big city or town, small town or village and tiny hamlet. Each list has a type of good, which varies depending on the settlement, a percentage chance it’s in stock and the percentage modification to the price.

Prices explain that these should fluctuate like availability does.

Encounters in the Shop has a table of encounters, with the encounters divided into the different settlements like the goods for sale.

Key to the Shop covers the various locations.

Security Measures explains how the shop prevents theft; perhaps oddly, especially if it’s in a small settlement, they have access to invisibility.

Potential Hirelings has twelve NPCs who might be looking for jobs.

The Owner and His Family and Employees has stats and details on the various people running or working at the shop.

The final page of content has a map of the shop.

Hagard’s General Store in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough with enough different sections that these would have been useful. Navigation is okay. The text maintains a single column format and some minor errors were noticed. Bar the map and covers, there are no illustrations. Presentation is okay.

This is what it looks like; a well described shop that could be dropped into many locations. As such, it is useful for fleshing out a settlement of any kind with a shop of a type that characters may want to visit. Hagard’s General Store can be found by clicking here.
