Gregorius21778: The Four Flames & the Final Archway

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Gregorius21778: The Four Flames & the Final Archway

Gregorius21778: The Four Flames & the Final Archway is a role playing game supplement written and published by Kai Pütz a.k.a Gregorius21778 for use with Lamentations of the Flame Princess. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

The supplement is available as a 14-page PDF from DriveThruRPG for $2 but was purchased at a reduced price during a sale. The PDF comes in two versions, one a more printer-friendly version lacking the page backgrounds. One page is the front cover, one the front matter and one the Open Game License.

Gregorius21778: The Four Flames & the Final ArchwayBackground explains that some dwarves worshipped a being, greater than mortal but lesser than a god, that was willing to share secrets. The cult was officially condemned and practitioners had to hide. The adventure has the characters learning about one of the hidden cult sites. A sidebar has some example motivations.

The Place explains roughly where to site the dungeon, and that those carrying a torch will get smoke in their face on the way down, giving them a penalty.

The Dungeon in General has an overview of the place and some creatures that inhabit it.

Architecture gives some general details, including some rules should a collapse be triggered, and the penalties should characters rope themselves together.

Random Encounters explains that there are no static encounters. Instead, an encounter is rolled on a d8 table, with encounters having a 1 in 8 chance of happening every turn. Encounters with bats, spiders and wraiths can happen multiple times. There are also four unique encounters and three ghosting encounters, each of which can only happen once.

Exploring has some rules for exploring the place, which has many fatal drops. This is followed by details on the different locations, included in which is The Four Flames, which has details on how to cast spells with the Flames and how to memorise them, plus a new summon variant that summons a new creature.

Appendix has four new creatures.

Gregorius21778: The Four Flames & the Final Archway in Review

The PDF is bookmarked with major and minor sections linked. Navigation is decent. The text maintains a two-column format and some minor errors were noticed. There are a number of black and white stock illustrations, plus a colour stock map. Presentation is decent.

This is a small, self-contained location that should be easy enough to drop into most settings, which should also be usable with other OSR games. The inclusion of new monsters and rules is a nice extra. Even though the location is quite small, it is described in quite a bit of detail, and it’s not a static location either. Gregorius21778: The Four Flames & the Final Archway is a decent little dungeon and it can be found by clicking here.
