A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Gregorius21778: Beware of the Spirits of the Woods

Gregorius21778: Beware of the Spirits of the Woods is a role playing game supplement written and published by Kai Pütz a.k.a Gregorius21778, primarily intended for use with Lamentations of the Flame Princess although it should be compatible with other OSR role playing games.

This is a six page PDF which is available as a Pay What You Want supplement from RPGNow. One page of the supplement is the front cover and around half a page is the front matter with around another half a page on how to use the supplement.

This is a set of six different encounters suitable for wooded areas. The encounters could perhaps all be described as fey in nature, and often somewhat dark. None are recommended as being a truly random encounter.

Gregorius21778: Beware of the Spirits of the WoodsCatch Me If You Can is an encounter with a pixie. Catching the pixie – and characters may not be able to resist giving chase – does give some benefits.

The Enraged Treant is a potentially dangerous encounter with a treant that objects to fires being set in the woods. Characters may lose possessions if they flee.

Eerie Whispers of the Wind is a potentially frightening (in game terms) encounter where the wind appears to be whispering.

The Rotting Deer and the Giant Stag is a potentially dangerous, and beneficial, encounter, with a stag inhabited by a nature spirit, one with an interesting back-story attached.

Thieving Fox-Imps has some pestiferous creatures causing a nuisance of themselves. Actually killing one will cause problems.

Night of the Lone Wulfen-Spirit has an encounter with a Wulfen-Spirit. An affected character can gain both beneficial abilities and a curse.

The PDF lacks bookmarks but at this length doesn’t really need any. The text maintains a single column format and the author, as he regularly does, warns that he is not a native English speaker, but there were only a couple of minor errors, other than capitalisation. There are a few black and white forest illustrations, which would appear to be photos that have been filtered to make them appear more like illustrations.

This is a nice collection of six rather different encounters, which are pretty detailed in nature. Some are beneficial, some are harmful and some are both. These can be made to give woods a perhaps darker feel than a sylvan one, harking back more to older depictions of fey areas. Gregorius21778: Beware of the Spirits of the Woods is recommended and can be checked out for free by clicking here.
