Gregorius21778: 20 Encounters in the Ruins of the Elder Beings

A Review of the Role Playing Game Supplement Gregorius21778: 20 Encounters in the Ruins of the Elder Beings

Gregorius21778: 20 Encounters in the Ruins of the Elder Beings is a role playing game supplement published by Kai Pütz a.k.a Gregorius21778 for use with Lamentations of the Flame Princess. As such, it is covered by the Open Game License and some parts are considered to be Open Game Content as a result.

This is a 16-page PDF that is available from DriveThruRPG as a Pay What You Want supplement. One page is the front cover, about half a page is the front matter and one page is the Open Game License.

What this is all about explains about an idea for an adventure set in an outpost of the Elder Beings, with a renewed conflict with the Mi-Go, one that the characters stumble across. However, a full-blown adventure did not arise from this, so there is instead a framework for encounters. A disclaimer states that this is inspired by H.P. Lovecraft, but some parts have been filled in.

A World in a Nutshell explains that the encounters are supposed to happen underground in a former outpost of the Elder Things or tunnels leading to such. In either case, it is long abandoned. There are a number of creatures listed for the food chain.

Different parties in search of…. states that there are three parties interested in the outpost; the Elder Things, the Mi-Go and the characters.

How to use the Encounters states that a d20 is rolled to get a result, but this result may be altered by other matters. another encounter could occur first, or another could occur after at a set point.

The table of encounters follows next. There are monsters and dressing, with the final encounter being a passage that is being sought.

Next are monster stats for Shoggoths, Elder Things, Mi-Go, Albino Cave Bats, Pale Slugs and Albino Stingers. The Elder Things and Mi-Go each have a described item.

How to turn this into a Mini-Adventure is on doing this. A map can be used and some of the encounters can be turned into location encounters. A list of XP rewards for various things is also given.

Gregorius21778: 20 Encounters in the Ruins of the Elder Beings in Review

The PDF lacks bookmarks and is long enough that these would have been useful. Navigation could be better. The text maintains a two-column format and a few minor errors were noticed. There are a couple of stock illustrations, colour and black and white, and presentation is okay.

This is, as it states, not an adventure in its current form. However, it is the framework for an adventure, and one could definitely be built around it. That would require a bit of work, but there is enough here to flesh something out. Alternatively, it could just be used as a free form series of encounters. Gregorius21778: 20 Encounters in the Ruins of the Elder Beings is a nice little supplement and it can be found by clicking here.
